Stamford’s Global Ties: A Local Perspective on International Connections

Stamford, Connecticut, is not just a vibrant city in its own right; it also serves as a microcosm of global interconnectedness. Our city’s international relationships, from sister city partnerships to hosting multinational corporations, reflect a commitment to fostering global understanding and economic growth.

Sister Cities: Building Bridges Across Continents

Stamford has established sister city relationships with several international locales, including Afula in Israel, Jiangdu in China, Kramatorsk in Ukraine, Lima in Peru, Minturno and Settefrati in Italy, and Sparta in Greece. These partnerships aim to promote cultural exchange, economic ties, and mutual understanding between our communities.

Economic Impact: A Hub for Global Business

Our city is home to numerous multinational corporations, contributing to a dynamic and diverse economic landscape. Companies such as Harman International Industries, with its global headquarters at 400 Atlantic Street, develop and manufacture products used worldwide. Harman’s brands include AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon, and Mark Levinson. In 2017, Harman ranked #386 on the Fortune 500 list, with 26,000 employees globally and nearly 150 based in Stamford. In November 2016, Samsung acquired Harman for $8 billion, yet it continues to operate independently through its world headquarters in Stamford.

Another notable company is Hexcel, headquartered at 281 Tresser Blvd. Hexcel develops and manufactures carbon fibers, industrial fabrics, and high-performance composite materials used in commercial aerospace, defense, and recreation industries. In 2017, Hexcel had over $2 billion in annual revenues, over 6,100 employees, about 50 of those in Stamford, and ranked #936 on the Fortune 1000 list. The Chairman, CEO, and President is Nick Stanage.

Cultural Exchange: Events and Community Engagement

Stamford’s commitment to global engagement is also evident in its cultural events and community initiatives. The Stamford Downtown Special Services District hosts yearlong events, including a tour of a world-class sculpture exhibit, “Alive@Five” and “Wednesday Nite Live” outdoor concerts in Columbus Park, Arts & Crafts on Bedford Street, and a giant helium balloon parade that marches through downtown, bringing thousands of people into the area.

These events not only enrich our local culture but also attract visitors from around the world, fostering a sense of global community within our city.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Global Connections

As Stamford continues to grow and evolve, our international relationships remain a cornerstone of our community’s identity. By nurturing these connections, we not only enhance our cultural and economic landscape but also contribute to a more interconnected and understanding world.

In embracing our global ties, Stamford exemplifies how local communities can play a pivotal role in fostering international cooperation and cultural exchange.
