Stamford has been actively pursuing initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and resilience. A notable effort is the city’s Climate and Sustainability Executive Order, which mandates departments to increase energy efficiency, expand electric vehicle infrastructure, and conduct a comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory. This inventory revealed that in 2021, emissions totaled over 1 million metric tons, averaging about 7.8 metric tons per person. Transportation and residential energy use each accounted for approximately 31% of these emissions.
To address these challenges, Stamford is developing its first Climate Action Plan. The initial phase has identified over 90 ongoing actions within municipal operations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, decreasing waste, and increasing resilience to climate risks. The forthcoming phase will set specific reduction targets and deadlines, incorporating efforts from residents, businesses, and community organizations.
In addition to policy initiatives, Stamford is investing in infrastructure to support sustainability. The city has secured grants to expand electric vehicle charging stations, with plans to install 20 new dual charging stations at the Stamford Government Center and 24 DC Fast Chargers at the Bedford and Summer Street Parking Garages. These efforts aim to promote the adoption of electric vehicles and reduce transportation-related emissions.
Community engagement plays a vital role in Stamford’s environmental efforts. Recently, volunteers participated in a salt marsh restoration project at Boccuzzi Park, focusing on removing invasive species and promoting native marsh vegetation. Such initiatives not only enhance local ecosystems but also foster a sense of stewardship among residents.
Stamford’s commitment to sustainability is further evidenced by its Silver Certification from Sustainable CT, achieved through comprehensive actions addressing climate change, energy efficiency, and community resilience. These ongoing efforts reflect the city’s dedication to creating a sustainable and resilient environment for all residents.
